Churrascaria: A Cutthroat Game of Gluttony Relaunch

Created by Absurdist Productions

Churrascaria is based on the experience of eating at a Brazilian-style steakhouse where waiters bring unlimited skewers of delicious meat directly to your table. Players are trying to eat all the succulent meats that appear on their plates while avoiding the equally delicious but ultimately unsatisfying sides and desserts that get in the way. All the while, food theft, plate swapping, and general backstabbing keep the food flying and the steaks high. In the end, the person who consumes the most meat wins!

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Fried Bananas and Potential Delays
almost 6 years ago – Mon, Jul 09, 2018 at 12:51:26 PM

Another month, another update. This time around we have some more art for you, along with another recipe, and some news on our overall progress.

First, we still have 18 backers who have not filled out their backerkit survey. We have sent out another reminder email to those individuals, so please watch for it and make sure to check your spam folders. We don't want people to miss out on their games because they didn't give us their information.

Next, here is a peek at another immortalized backer card in progress from the talented Ellie Jang. This one is going in as an alternative for Second Helping.

If you've been counting you know we have 10 immortalized backers, and 10 cards in the action/reaction deck. So every card minus the Look Over There card will have two versions in the box. The original art that you can see in the current print and play, and the wonderful immortalized art that we have been previewing over the last two months. Once this card is finalized there will be one more piece and then the expansion card art. Which we should have for you to see soon.

Which leads me to some progress updates. Due to a number of factors, we may have to adjust the October release date. We still think we will make it, but we can't promise it. Part of this was poor planning on our part, when we launched the campaign the game was done and ready to go, with time to get five immortalized backer pieces scheduled in. But, then we added on five more slots for immortalized backers, which doubled the amount of work we were putting on ourselves. Along with that, it took a lot longer for all of our immortalized backers to get us their pictures. Both of these things have caused some delays that mean we haven't gotten the art to the printers yet. And with summer in full swing, the schedule for the printers is filling up, meaning that there may be some delays before they can start printing once we send them everything.

For now, we are still aiming for a late October delivery, but we are also being realistic. As soon as we have more information we will let everyone know. On the plus side our game is relatively small, and being just cards and tokens it should be pretty quick for them to printer and ship.

Until then though, here is another recipe for you to enjoy while you wait for your copies of our crazy game of gluttony.

The recipe for Bananas Fritas is pretty simple but so delicious.

4 servings
4 firm bananas (slightly under-ripe)
2 tablespoons butter (preferably unsalted)
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup rum (optional)

Start by peeling the bananas and slicing into 1 inch slices. In a large skillet or frying pan, melt butter over medium heat until it begins to bubble. Add banana slices to the pan, and if using rum slowly drizzle it over the bananas. Allow the slices to cook for 2 minutes and then flip, allow to continue cooking until golden brown.

While the banana slices are cooking mix the sugar and cinnamon. When bananas have finished cooking use a slotted spoon to transfer the bananas to a serving bowl and then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mixture.

Serve bananas while still hot.

A Recipie and News.

Hello ladies and gentlemen. It’s been about a month since the last update so just wanted to let you all know how things are coming along. First a reminder that if you haven’t already, we really need you to fill out the Backer Survey you've been sent so we can get final counts of any add-ons, as well as have your address for shipping the game come October. We still have 30 backers who haven't answered their surveys. If you can't find it, check your Spam folders, or message us here and we will see about resending you the survey.

Now for the actual updates, as you can see we’ve gotten a new Immortalized card in. This one is obvious as a new rendition of Summon the Passadores.

And just for fun, I’ve also attached the early sketch of the next card which actually pairs two of our Immortalized backers who happen to be friends in real life. Really looking forward to seeing this one all finished up.

While Ellie continues to work on the art side of things, Will and I continue work on the logistics side. We have the manufacturer, freight, and fulfilment all locked down and looking good so that as soon as the final art is in we can send things off to start this whole manufacturing process rolling.

Until then, I’m also still hard at work on the recipe book stretch goal. Which has been a delicious task of testing recipes. As a sample, I’m going to include one below for you all to try out at home.

4 servings
3 cups vanilla ice cream
3 cups papaya chilled (about 3 medium ripe papaya)
Crème de cassis Liqueur (optional)

Start by chilling four 16 ounce goblets, or your preferred serving dish. Set out the ice cream to thaw slightly and peel the papayas. After peeling split the papayas lengthwise and remove all seeds. Cut the papaya into cubes and then add papaya and ice cream to a blender, pulse at medium speed until smooth and creamy, using a spatula between pulses to scrap down the sides. Pour equal amounts of the papaya cream into each goblet. top with a dollop of whip cream and a splash of Crème de cassis just before serving, if desired.

Crème de cassis is sweet a blackcurrant liqueur that you should be able to at your local liqueur store.  Alternatively, you could also use a blackcurrant syrup.

Backer Surveys and new art!
almost 6 years ago – Mon, May 21, 2018 at 08:51:52 PM

The insanity continues here at Absurdist HQ. I just got back from a week in St Louis and the amazing Geekway to the West convention where I spent some time showing off Churrascaria and doing playtests of a few of our other in development games. Along with playing several great games by other designers and publishers.

Next weekend you'll find us down in Dallas at the BGG Con where we will continue showing off our favorite game of gluttony to promote the pre-orders for those who missed the campaign.

Meanwhile, we have started getting in the Immortalized backer art from the amazing Ellie Jang. We aren't going to reveal who is going on which card just yet, but here are a few teaser images to whet your appetites:

Finally, you can expect the backer surveys to start hitting your inboxes by the end of this week. If you don't see it by Saturday make sure you check your spam folders. We are using BackerKit as a pledge manage which allows us to offer late pledges/pre-orders and means that even if you didn't add additional funds to your pledge during the campaign for the add-ons you will still be able to do that once you get your survey. So if anyone decides they would like another copy of the game or some of the cool playmats we are making, they'll be able to do that.

One last piece of business, we had 8 backers that Kickstarter wasn't able to collect funds from. Since we are using BackerKit those individuals will still get a survey and should be able to choose their reward as normal, but will have to pay via BackerKit. Of course if anyone has any issues please contact us.

Now I need to go do laundry from this weekend and start figuring out my packing for next weekend. Till next time ladies and gents.

Its a Meat Celebration!
almost 6 years ago – Thu, May 03, 2018 at 12:12:05 PM

We did it ladies and gentlemen, or really I should say you did it. Thanks to the 379 people who backed this crazy project we raised $11,553 so that Churrascaria: A Cutthroat Game of Gluttony can be printed and sent out to the world.

Thanks to you we unlocked every single one of our stretch goals. Meaning the cards in the game will be nicer, the box will be nicer, and even the food request tokens will be nicer. This will be the version of the game I dreamed about for years, but which we were a little worried we might not be able to afford.

And on top of that you guys are getting a PDF cookbook (which I’m currently writing and revising) and a mini expansion to the game. Oh, and let’s not forget the player mats, which we somehow worried people wouldn’t want. Silly us.

Now that the campaign is over we will be slowing down how often we send out updates so we don’t bombard you with information. Expect one every two weeks or so as we keep you up to date on the progress of everything as we prepare the game for printing. And of course you’ll be getting the first glimpses of all the new art that Ellie is creating for the Immortalized cards, the player mat, and the expansion.

You will be receiving an email sometime next week to access the BackerKit, which will allow you to handle add-ons and the like, and for those who missed the campaign we will be offering preorders of the game through BackerKit for a limited time as well. So watch your email boxes for that.

Again we thank each and every one of you for your support, and we can’t wait to have the finished games in your hands. Until then, keep on gaming, and watch out for those pesky sides and desserts.

Last 24 hours, and one Stretch Goal to go.
about 6 years ago – Wed, May 02, 2018 at 10:55:10 PM

I'll keep this one short and sweet.

Yesterday we unlocked the player mats, then you wonderful people pushed us up another thousand and unlocked the upgraded food request tokens. Now we are just a few hundred away from the final stretch goal of the campaign, which would add a six card mini-expansion to the game.

When we started this campaign reaching this point was nothing more than a dream. But you've all made it happen and we can't thank you enough. Now let's finish this thing out with a bang and get that expansion unlocked.
